What’s so special about Atlantic City Casinos?

Betivity wants to focus on a special topic relating to gambling and casinos in the United States. We are not talking about Las Vegas; we are talking about Atlantic City, the historical referent to gambling in the East Coast. Betivity would like to tackle the importance this city has had in the casino industry, the current condition and what the future holds for this casino hub. There are a few important bits of information you should now which make the whole topic quite interesting moving forward. Let’s find out why Atlantic City calls itself the “Gambling Capital of the East Coast”.

History of Atlantic City and their Casinos

In case you didn’t know, Atlantic City is located in New Jersey. The destination hosts a large number of hotels, casinos, beaches and a lengthy boardwalk. Throughout the years it has become the Las Vegas type vacation for New Yorkers and other states located in the East. If we go all the way back to the beginning, this city was established around 1854 and has blossomed into what it is now.

Legalized casinos started making a presence in Atlantic City after the successful voting in 1974. The first casino to open called itself the Resorts Atlantic City (which is still open to this day), and after that, it was followed by more. It made sense as legalized gambling in this city started becoming a thing, the interest and potential grew over time. Various factors made this an attractive location for east coasters, looking at Atlantic City is a place to party and vacation.

Atlantic City provided many jobs for the population with the increase of casinos. In fact, in 2011 there were approximately 33,000 jobs relating to this type of business. Unfortunately, due to the economic situation in the USA during the crisis of 2009, there were many changes to come.

A bit of trouble for Atlantic City Casinos

So, as mentioned before, the financial crisis in the United States affected many businesses and families. Sadly some casinos in Atlantic City had to close down because of negative numbers and poor negotiations with their workers. For example, 2014 was plagued by the shutdown of Atlantic Club, Showboat Casino, Revel Casino and Trump Plaza. In 2016, current president Donald Trump, decided to close down his Trump Taj Mahal. This last shutdown has plans to become a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, which is a good sign of a healthy economy may be coming along.

If we go even further into the past, Sands closed down in 2006. Trump Marino sold the casino in 2011 and turned into the Golden Nugget Casino. The Playboy Casino, Trump World’s Fair, and Claridge also stopped providing their services decades ago. As you can see, Donal Trump had a strong influence in the city, but with a sad ending for every one of his projects.

There are a couple of reasons regarding the casino demise. We mentioned earlier about the financial crisis that hit the country in 2009. Situations like these usually mean that there is less money to spend on tourism, entertainment, and other noncritical expenditures. So, it makes sense how business-like casinos and hotels will decrease their income and cause a state of emergency in the business. Besides, there were new legalised regions near Atlantic City that allowed casino activity, making it less likely tourists would go all the way there and gamble.

Current state and future projections for the Atlantic City Casinos

At this instant, there are various options for tourists to gamble at multiple casinos in Atlantic City. Let’s name them: Resorts, Caesars, Bally’s, Harrah’s, Tropicana, Golden Nugget, Borgata and Hard Rock at some point in 2018. Each of those provides hotel rooms with different themes and concepts. Caesars dedicates itself to the Roman Empire. Whereas Tropicana looks like the Old Havana, and Golden Nuggets lets you live the Gold Era Rush.

Betivity projects that as other regions legalize casinos, it’ll be more challenging to attract the same levels of tourism as before. On one side, it is part of the American culture to go to Atlantic City casinos to play poker, blackjack, roulette or any other casino game. But, on the other side, Atlantic City is becoming an old town with old buildings. Baby boomers might still look into setting up a trip there with their family or pals, but the new generations might look for other casinos elsewhere. But what do we know right?
